Nerds, geeks, and techies of varying shapes and sizes were in full force at ScreenBurn at SXSW's Dorkbot event last night, celebrating the art and slick stylings of being a dork – and that's a compliment of the highest regard. But how does one even begin to describe the inner workings of Dorkbot? Rodney Gibbs, CEO of Ricochet Labs and event organizer has you covered.
"It's basically a coming out party for geeks," Gibbs said. "You have all these shady mad scientists together in one area, sometimes displaying their creations for the first time. "
To put the social experience into perspective, Dorkbot rallies up the world's geekiest of geeks to perform, entertain, and sometimes even make crowds cringe, with their self-made bots. These bots come from the minds of the creators that can either make music, do something altogether pointless, or in the case of last night, create miniature 3D objects out of the same material that Legos are created. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but in the end it comes from the heart.
"These guys do this outside their regular jobs; we have designers, programmers, everybody, who do this because they love it and want to show their talents to others." Gibbs said. "This is their baby. "
Past Dorkbots have seen creations range from full augmented body suits producing light shows to speaker systems being fed natural gas through a series of pipes, producing a musical experience where fire would shoot out to the beat of the sounds. And if you just happen to have your bot on you (really, who wouldn't at SXSW?), there's Open Dork, Dorkbots' version of amateur night where your 15 minutes of fame can easily be had.
Dorkbot was a smashing success, with plenty of passion, bots, and beer to showcase one of the premiere talent shows in Austin. Only at ScreenBurn at SXSW can attendees be provided with one-of-a-kind experiences and instill the kind of fervor Reid Perez, Dorkbot performer, expressed to the crowd last night to near rock star levels.
