The ScreenBurn at SXSW Arcade was all about giving the industry a chance to hone in on their artistic side with companies showing off their work, or in most cases, providing the tools to create and distribute. The Rock Band Network, GameSalad, and Into the Pixel are all set to change all we know about content creation and distribution.
Video game art is finally getting the attention it deserves by the world’s only curated art exhibition, Into the Pixel. A joint effort of the Entertainment Software Association, the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences, and the Prints & Drawings Council of LACMA, Into the Pixel brings together the traditional fine art and digital art worlds to explore and celebrate the art and artists behind the video game. In fact, Jason Manley, President of leading game & entertainment universe developer Massive Black and all-out crusader for the art world, wants everyone to know that the opportunity to become an artist is there if you just reach out to The Art Department, a bleeding edge art school specializing in Entertainment Design, Illustration, I.P. Development and Fine Art.
“Art schools out here should not be changing the grammar of art by making it only accessible to the rich,” Manley said. “We have TWO MILLION dollars in scholarships that we want to give to people with passion and drive. People need to start looking at us and realize what the grammar of art should truly be about.”
Just as the art movement finds its footing, so too does the music industry need to find its place online. Rock Band Network is the new system from Harmonix, makers of the Rock Band franchise of video games, that allows bands to turn their songs into playable content for Rock Band. Set to revolutionize not only the games industry, but the music industry as well, Rock Band Network will allow bands to author their content using tools available on the Rock Band Network website. Worried that the network will be filled with lackluster tracks and chalkboard scratching noise? Worry not as the entire network is judged by peer review, ensuring only the highest-quality of tracks make it into the game! Bands who submit songs are even entitled to their fair share of the set price.
Gendai Games takes things a step further with their game creator, GameSalad, which turns average joes into game creation pros! Using an easy drag-and-drop interface, Gendai Games hopes to reach the masses and redefine the usual toolset given to amateur game creators. GameSalad is poised to be the leading software for creating games and digital media on multiple platforms.
Leaders of the art movement, we salute you! With the ScreenBurn at SXSW Arcade attendees are allowed to express themselves in brave, new ways; a feat unheard of not even a few years ago!
