Jason Manley has a problem with the education system and how it arbitrarily assigns grades to students. He has a problem with how much it costs for a student with an artistic vision to get the education they need. He definitely has a problem with the quality of education; what you supposedly get when you finally do lay down the big bucks for those arbitrary grades Manley despises so much. But at the ScreenBurn at SXSW Arcade, Jason Manley, president of full production artwork and asset outsourcing studio Massive Black, is set to change all that for his vision of what an education in art should be.
“I'm tired of our education system and all these supposed art schools that are just putting students in debt.” Manley says. “I didn't get into art school until I was 26. That's just not right. If you look into art history there were people that started at the age of 9! Why do you have to go through a system that costs so much to follow your passion?”
Manley's vision is in a whole new way of education through The Art Department; a career driven art school designed by industry leading artists to train students to manage the reality of being successful in today’s digital creative world. There are no degrees and no pass or fail. Students learn along with their instructors in a personal, yet disciplined atmosphere that takes anywhere from 15 to 30 months to complete depending upon advancement. In fact, Manley says this form of education is versatile, cost effective, and what education should be.
“I'm not going to name any names but there are art schools out there that place the student in debt before they even walk through the door,” Manley says. “You have the ridiculous cost of living in their dorms, putting money into instructors that don't match the quality of education, and investing time into a degree that doesn't even guarantee you a job in the industry. The Art Department is set to change all those systems that have become 'accepted'.”
Classes can be streamed live, taken online, on campus, or a mixture of both and over two million dollars worth of scholarships is up for grabs for those who qualify. With sponsorship from Massive Black and its' headstrong leader, The Art Department is making their presence known.
